State police say the crash happened on the Palisades Interstate Parkway near the Anthony Wayne Recreation Area at Bear Mountain.
One of the cars apparently hit a tree and split in half.
Traffic was backed up for miles while police investigated.
Police have not released any details on injuries, the exact number of cars involved or what caused the crash.
