The city is considering a plan to rezone a section of the north Bronx to preserve its character from developers.
The City Planning Commission is deciding whether to rezone a 134-block area in Wakefield and Eastchester. The local community board is reviewing the plan, which it will vote on Thursday, April 26. Groups, such as the Wakefield Taxpayers' and Civic League, are pushing for the change.
Residents believe the rezoning will allow the neighborhoods to keep their suburban feel and charm while allowing for growth along nearby White Plains Road. They complain area development has gone unchecked for far too long.
"Our streets are crowded, we're changing traffic patterns, we don't have enough parking. The worse part is losing our soul, the architectural beauty," one resident said.
