City Island residents are advocating for ferry service and other infrastructure improvements they say could help revitalize the local economy, as vacant storefronts continue to line parts of the neighborhood.
More than 20 storefronts on City Island currently sit vacant, according to the community group City Island Rising, which is spearheading a petition to boost foot traffic and attract new businesses.
The group argues that adding ferry service would make the island more accessible and bring in more visitors, potentially improving customer flow for local businesses. Supporters say upgraded access could also encourage new business owners to occupy vacant retail spaces.
Currently, City Island is accessible only by car or bus, limiting transportation options for visitors.
The City Island Rising petition has garnered more than 2,000 signatures.
Two years ago, NYC Ferry officials said there were no plans to expand service to City Island. However, community groups say the New York City Economic Development Corporation has recently identified the area as a potential future ferry stop.
