The city of Yonkers received special recognition on Wednesday in honor of its contributions during World War II.
The city was officially designated as an American World War II Heritage City by the National Park Service's American World War Two Heritage Cities Program.
During the war, Yonkers played a crucial role in supporting the war effort including the training of an estimated 10,000 and women for "war work" at the Yonkers School of Aeronautical Manufacturing, as well as producing five generals, four of whom graduated from Yonkers High School.
The honor made Yonkers the only city in New York state to be given the designation.
