Cleanup is underway after a massive water main break on Division Street near the train station in New Rochelle.
Water was gushing down the roadway at the height of rush hour when commuters were getting off Metro-North.
"Two blocks, you just see water coming out of the ground from any direction,” says maintenance worker Odell Melvin. “When we came out, I already knew that it was a water main break, but you could just see the water gushing out of the ground."
Officials say a 16-inch pipe cracked most likely due to cold weather around 4 p.m. The gushing water caused the roads to buckle.
"It's a major concern because you don't want to see anybody without water, especially this time of year," says New Rochelle Police Sgt. Myron Joseph.
Suez was at the scene all evening, excavating the street to see how bad the break is.
A few nearby residents had water shut off for a while, but there is no boil-water advisory. There were also no delays or cancellations for Metro-North.
Police ask residents to avoid the area. Huguenot Street, Division Street, Memorial Highway, Railroad Place and Bridge Street will remain blocked off overnight.
