A community forum focusing on post-traumatic stress disorder seeks to raise awareness about services offered to Bronx veterans.
The forum was run by members of the Gethsemane Baptist Church. They wanted to meet with the neighborhood and public officials to educate them about the disorder and to get the word out about what services are offered at the veteran center.
Officials at the Bronx Veteran Center say not enough veterans coming home from the war zone know about the services available to them. They say not enough veterans are taking advantage of the help and treatment offered for post-traumatic stress disorder.
Vietnam veteran Tom Solomon says he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder for more than 30 years before finding a support group at the center. He says he hopes the men and women coming hope from Iraq don?t wait as long as he did.
?I would tell them now that they?re back, seek help and stick to a plan,? Solomon says.
Organizers say they plan to continue bringing further changes and help to Bronx veterans. People who seek help for themselves or family members are encouraged to call the center at (718) 367-3500 or stop by at 170 Kingsbridge Road.
