Community members and residents of 111 Lockwood Ave. attended a New Rochelle Municipal Housing Authority board meeting on Monday to ask for answers following claims of consistent and unresolved elevator problems in the building.
The property at 111 Lockwood Ave. is managed by the New Rochelle Municipal Housing Authority, or NRMHA, but is owned by PRC, according to the NRMHA.
Community members and residents say that their concerns have gone unanswered following years of elevator complications in the senior housing facility.
In a board meeting on Monday, members of the community expressed their concerns about the elevators.
"Somebody is going to die. Because I'm going to tell you something. A couple times, I almost got stuck and its a terrible feeling to be in a building in a small space with no ventilation," said Frances Dewarte-Izzo, a caretaker of a resident at the building.
She says her cousin who lives in the building who she is the caregiver for was stuck in the elevator this past week and needed to be rescued.
In response, she went door knocking in the building and got more than 45 residents to sign a petition calling for change.
The New Rochelle Municipal Housing Authority, or NRMHA, issued the following statement in response during the meeting:
"One of the elevators on the property is currently out of service. The issue has been reported, and the elevator has been safely secured and taken offline to ensure resident safety...The second elevator in the building remains operational. The elevator service company has been contacted and made aware of the issue that we are bringing an evaluation of response so that repairs can proceed as soon as possible. As many of you know, New Rochelle Housing Authority owns and operates only Bracey, however we continue to serve as a managing agent for 111 Lockwood which is owned by PRC. We are currently working closely and collaborating with PRC to resolve this situation promptly and responsibly. We recognize how critical elevator service is to the daily lives of our residents and we appreciate your patience and understanding while we work towards a resolution. We will continue to keep you updates as they become available."
As of Monday, June 16, the second elevator remains out of order.
