If you’ve been stuck in traffic in South Blooming Grove recently — you’re not alone.

A state-approved road project at the intersection of Route 208 and Mountain Road is causing major backups, with drivers reporting long delays during the morning and afternoon commute.

“It’s a lot. A lot of traffic all the time,” said one frustrated driver outside of a nearby deli. “It’s taken me 45 minutes from here to get past the traffic light before.”

The congestion is tied to a Village of South Blooming Grove project to add a second traffic lane at the busy intersection. The goal is to reduce congestion and minimize crashes. The plan was recently approved by the state Department of Transportation, but not before some controversy.

News 12 was first to report last year when the village added a lane without state DOT approval. That work was later reversed by the state. Now, with proper permits in place, the project is moving forward — but not without continued frustration from drivers.

“My sister told me it's every time she has to go to work. One time she said it was 45 minutes,” says Chester resident Fern Tulias. “I hope they’re finished with their project soon.”

According to the Village, only one lane will be open through Friday between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m., affecting both directions of traffic. Drivers are advised to expect delays and consider alternate routes. The Village recommends using Pedlar Hill Road, Prospect Road, Craigville Road, or Old Mansion Road. Detour signs have been posted in the area to help guide drivers around the construction zone.
