Many day laborers spent Saturday cleaning up Columbus Park in Mamaroneck, a place where they used to gather to look for work.
The immigrants wanted to clean the park to show residents that they care about the community. Some residents say they feel the immigrants are stealing jobs away from the American public. Recently, the village closed down the parking lot and added a police presence to prevent the day laborers from gathering there. The move could lead to a possible first amendment lawsuit against Mamaroneck.
Hispanic leaders say they will continue to investigate whether or not the village of Mamaroneck is violating the rights of day laborers by keeping them out of the park.
