The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene released guidelines Thursday to better help doctors detect illnesses in September 11th first responders from the Bronx and city.
The guidelines warn against smoking and other practices that doctors feel can worsen respiratory problems. The new report gives health care practitioners information on physical effects related to the debris and dust inhaled at the World Trade Center site. Previously, health experts provided guidelines for the treatment of depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and chemical dependency.
Thousands of firefighters, police officers and construction workers were exposed to the rubble after the deadly terrorist attacks. Many have since reported a reduction in lung function.
