Homes in the Hudson Valley shined blue Tuesday night to show support for the men and women in blue.

The effort being called "Hudson Valley Goes Blue" was sparked in East Fishkill and asks people to light up their front porches with blue lights to let law enforcement officers know they appreciate them.

Organizers say they came up with the idea when they felt like all officers were being negatively portrayed in the media after several high-profile incidents involving officers and the protests that followed.

"There’s so many people out there that support law enforcement. That’s why I believe showing this blue light will really give everyone in law enforcement to know that, we’re out there, we support you, we understand you and we love you," says Marybeth McCabe Amico, of East Fishkill.

"Law enforcement does so much for our communities, it's more than just law and order. They get trained to everything from mental health to Narcan... it's really amazing," says East Fishkill Councilman Anil Beephan (R).

Amico and Beephan hope every year people will turn their lights blue on Oct. 13, which also happens to be a radio code for officer down or in distress.

Yorktown and a municipality in Orange County also participated.
