‘Electric’s time has come.’ Newtown man sets Guinness World Record for electric van trip in single charge

A Newtown man is now in the record books for a carbon-free east coast trip.
Stephen Marlin is a client solutions account executive with Bright Drop, a subsidiary of General Motors, but he has an extensive technical background.
On April 20, Marlin was asked to take one of the company's electric vans designed for FedEx, and set a Guinness World Record by driving 258 miles from New York City to Washington, D.C. on a single electric charge.
"I knew a lot about the vehicle and was prepared to drive it over the road," said Marlin.
Marlin says he never thought he'd make history.
"Never in my wildest dreams. Somewhere my fourth-grade self is really smiling real big right now that we did this. So very exciting stuff," said Marlin.
FedEx is now using some of the electric vans in California.
Marlin says they are very efficient and with rising gas prices, can save an average of $10,000 a year on gas and maintenance.
"Electric's time has come. The battery technology is now how we can deliver 250 miles of range. We can now realistically give fleets the range they need to get out and do their job," said Marlin.
Marlin says Bright Drop is also talking to other delivery companies about going electric and hitting the road in the next few years.
General Motors says the vans are part of an effort to make its fleet carbon neutral by 2035.
