People living in the Timber Ridge community of Woodbury in Orange County are now back in their homes following a gas leak-related evacuation.
A gas leak on Helene Circle was discovered around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, and testing showed elevated levels of gas in multiple homes.
Emergency crews issued an order of evacuation for all the homes on Helene Circle and as an extra precaution all the homes on surrounding streets.
Justin Denenberg lives on Walnut Way. Denenberg said he and others were told, "The level of gas that's coming out of the street is unsafe and explosive levels that we have to evacuate."
"Definitely chose the wrong day to do this, one of the hottest days this week but thankfully everybody was safe," he said.
A temporary shelter was set up at the Woodbury Senior Center, while Central Hudson crews worked through the night to fix the busted gas pipe.
The evacuation order was lifted around 5 a.m., and some homes began getting power back. Gas took a bit longer, as crews go house to house to restore it.
