Ex-Spring Valley fire inspector files wrongful termination suit
The former Spring Valley fire inspector says he wants to know why he lost his job.
John Zajack says he was shocked when Mayor Alan Simon unexpectedly let him go. Zajack is filing a wrongful termination lawsuit against the village in the hope that he can get his job back.
"He didn't give me any particular reason. Any indication I had from him or any others in the office said I was doing a good job," he said.
Zajack, who scored second highest in the state on fire inspections, recently completed his seven-month probationary period. He says it was only days later that Simon fired him.
Justin Schwartz, chairman of the Rockland County Illegal Housing Task Force, says he is not happy with the mayor's decision. Schwartz says he's concerned with who the mayor is rumored to now be using --- Anthony Mallia. The former Ramapo building inspector was convicted of a felony for tampering with public records and undercharging contractors for permits in 2016.
A state monitor is currently overseeing the Building Department after the village's lack of fire and safety enforcement.
