The unprecedented order to scale back flights nationwide by the Federal Aviation Administration is set to take effect this morning.

While there were no cancellations or delays on the departure board at Westchester County Airport for the first flights out, that could change as the day goes on.

The FAA announced they would cut 10 percent of flights at 40 major airports around the country due to the government shut down. The move is an attempt to alleviate stress on essential airport employees who have been working without pay, specifically the air traffic controllers.

The 40 airports selected span more than two dozen states and include hubs such as Atlanta, Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, Charlotte, North Carolina.

And in some metropolitan areas like New York, Houston, Chicago and Washington, multiple airports will be impacted.

Airport workers tell News12 they are bracing for the cutbacks to eventually affect smaller airports such as Westchester.

Travelers flying this weekend are advised to constantly check with your carriers. Airlines were left scrambling and started canceling flights Thursday. Get to the airport a ahead of your flight, give yourself more time than you normally might.

Depending on where you're flying you may want to think about car rental as a backup up plan just to make sure you don't get stranded.
