Family and friends of Dariel Vasquez came together at Ramapo High School on Monday to remember the 18-year-old who died over the weekend while working to contain the wildfire in Greenwood Lake.
Vasquez was a 2024 Ramapo High School graduate and was on the varsity baseball team since his freshman year. He became the captain of the East Ramapo Titans as a senior and even earned an award that year for being a student athlete.
His teammates and coach remember him on and off the field.
"It's been tough - he was just a great kid," said baseball coach Chris Landry, who has a picture with Vasquez when he won an award his senior year for being a student athlete. "He was a team player. He did whatever it took for the team and it was amazing. He was awesome kid."
News 12 got dozens of photos and videos from those who knew him.
The team returned to the diamond on Monday along with the family and other friends of Vasquez.
They released balloons on the count of seven, which was his jersey number.
Vasquez worked with the state Parks Department and at the Shoprite in Garnerville.
