Orange County authorities say a fire last month at the former site of a New York City- run shelter was caused by arson.

As News 12 reported, the fire on July 19 damaged a barn and storage shed at the closed site in Chester.

The barn had old mattresses inside from when the facility closed in 2008 that officials say had to be removed before the fire could be put out.

The investigation has been turned over to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, and officials say a guard is now stationed at the county-owned site because of trespassers.

County officials say future plans for the site include a county park with a nearby rail trail.
