A fire that started Monday in an apartment building in Mount Vernon reignited Tuesday morning.
Fire officials say they were called to 325 Highland Ave. at 6 p.m. on Monday and then again around 3 a.m. Tuesday. Firefighters from Eastchester, New Rochelle and Yonkers are providing mutual aid.
There is no word on what caused the flames to start again or if anyone has been hurt Tuesday.
"So this is an occupied building. They did have a renovation project conducting and that is we're looking at that as one of many possibly causes," says Mount Vernon Fire Chief Kim Odindo.
In the original fire Monday, fire officials say two
firefighters suffered minor injuries and one resident was taken to the hospital
after suffering smoke inhalation. They say 20 families were left
homeless. They say the building was under renovation but it is unknown if that played a role in the fire.
Since occupancy was unavailable after Monday’s fire, no one
was believed to be in the building today.
The Red Cross is coordinating with Office of Emergency
Management to connect with displaced families.
This is an active scene and officials are asking motorist to avoid the area.
