Relatives of the children killed in last year's Woodycrest Avenue fire are working with members of a Highbridge mosque help raise the funds for an expansion.
A fundraiser was held Saturday to collect money for the Masjed Deyaue of Islam, which runs an after-school program. The program is run six days a week and offers instruction on African culture and the Arabic language. The Magassa and Soumarie children, who perished in the Woodycrest Avenue fire, used to attend the program.
"While our program is well beyond capacity, this is only a quarter of children we could serve," says Imam Moussa Zeidy Wague, the program's director.
Members of the mosque are asking for individual contributions as well as reaching out to elected officials at the borough, city and state levels for support.
