The Highland Falls-Fort Montgomery School Board has rejected its budget in an effort to pressure Albany to restore state education aid.
Roxanne Donnery, leader of the Highland Falls Community Action Group, says she wants Albany lawmakers to know that their funding formulas are having a catastrophic effect.
"It's going to be a ghost town if somebody doesn't step forward," she says.
Donnery says most of the district's taxable land is owned by West Point and New York state. Only 7 percent of the land is taxpayer-owned, making the district entirely reliant on state and federal funding, Donnery says.
A state spokesman says if the district doesn't present a budget by June, the state education commissioner will intervene.
