Hudson Valley schools are preparing for major infusions of cash thanks to the American Rescue Plan -- but what will that money means for students?

Orange County schools are getting close to $100 million in stimulus money, and are expecting it by June.

"We are waiting to find out the details. The devil is in the details," says Dr. Roberto Padilla, superintendent for the Newburgh Enlarged City School District. "So while we're excited and yes this is much-needed money, we need to get the details on how the money is supposed to be spent."

Superintendents from Orange and Dutchess counties joined Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney in Newburgh as they wait for funds to help with reopening and programs to keep remote students on track to move up or graduate.

"There's a correlation to the damage we've seen due to the pandemic," says Maloney. "It's not just a blank check but we want to make sure that there aren't unnecessary obstacles to getting needs filled at a local level."

Newburgh is among the top three schools in Orange County getting the most stimulus money -- along with Kiryas Joel and Middletown.

So far, we know that the money must be used by 2023 for pandemic-related needs to address learning loss, after school and summer school programs, mental health services, technology and public health and safety upgrades.
