A growing push to loosen federal restrictions on marijuana has reached local levels, thanks to a lawsuit filed by an attorney in the Hudson Valley.

Hudson Valley attorney and New York Cannabis Bar Associate David Holland argues in the 90-page complaint, co-filed on behalf of five clients, that federal law misclassifies marijuana as a "Schedule 1 drug" - something reserved for the most dangerous substances, like heroin and PCP, and found to have no medical use.

"Twenty-nine states and the District of Columbia have all said there's medical value to it,” he says. Medical marijuana is legal in New York.

While the lawsuit doesn't necessarily call for the legalization of marijuana, Holland says it's at least a push to reclassify cannabis with other drugs that are more loosely controlled.
