A day of remembrance was observed throughout the Hudson Valley and the nation Thursday on the seventh anniversary of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
Thousands gathered at the site of the World Trade Center as the names of the 2,751 victims were read aloud by family members and people representing each country that lost citizens in the attacks. As in years past, moments of silence were observed at the times the planes hit each tower of the World Trade Center and the moments at which each tower fell.
In Haverstraw, a moment of silence was observed at the memorial for the 75 Rockland County victims. The names of the victims were read as children placed red roses along a memorial wall.
Laurie Weinberg, of New City, lost her husband Steven. She says the anniversary is a horrible remembrance of how her family's lives have changed.
"My youngest was 6 when he lost his father and how he probably doesn't even remember all that much of him and what he's missed watching our kids grow up."
A special Mass was held at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Nyack Wednesday night to honor the victims as well. Ceremonies were also held in Cortlandt Manor and Newburgh.
A total of 44 Orange County and 75 from Rockland County residents died in the attack.
