Today is the first day of classes for Laurel Plains Elementary School students who are now attending school in a different building after noxious odors caused some students and faculty to feel ill at their original campus.
The Hillcrest Elementary School had to be shut down due to budget cuts this year, which left the building open for Laurel Plains administrators to lease while tests are conducted to determine the source of those foul odors.
The Clarkstown School District is leasing Hillcrest for $16,000 a month, adding a welcome boost to the East Ramapo School District, which was forced to shut the school down.
Students and teachers are expected to be at the Hillcrest school for at least a month or two while tests and repairs are conducted at the Laurel Plains campus.
