Immigrants are creating more jobs and businesses in formerly listless Bronx neighborhoods, according to a new study.
The Center for an Urban Future found immigrants are critical to growth in major U.S. cities. The study points to the need for revitalization in post-9/11 New York City due to economic hardship. The center credits immigrants' entrepreneurial spirit for the turnaround, saying they are doing more for some local economies than U.S. citizens. Figures show small businesses pay out more than 45 percent of the private payroll in the Bronx and across the nation.
The study also found cities have done a poor job including immigrant businesses in overall economic planning. Experts say language barriers, providing health care and expanding can be problems for these storeowners.
