A study by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission concluded that Indian Point Energy Center can move forward in the next step toward re-licensing its reactors.
Entergy, the owner of Indian Point, wants to renew the licenses for Units Two and Three for another 20 years. The current licenses expire in 2013 and 2025 respectively.
Phillip Musegaas, a spokesperson for the environmental group Riverkeeper, says he believes the NRC hasn't been raising questions about the safety of the aging nuclear facility.
Although the report is a milestone in the renewal process, the NRC is not expected to reach a decision before late next year at the earliest.
