The new emergency siren system for the Indian Point Nuclear Power Plant was put through tests Thursday before it goes on line.The old siren system is being replaced because of repeated failures. Work on the new system was supposed to be completed by the end of January. However, that deadline was extended because of structural problems with a county-owned tower in Valhalla. The sirens are used to warn people in a 10-mile radius of the plant in case of an emergency. The new system has six fewer sirens with about 10 in new locations.

Additional tests will be conducted over the coming weeks before the new system is ready to go on line. Until then, the old system will remain in place.
