Two Yonkers police officers are being hailed as heroes for saving a mother and baby after they were run over by an alleged drunk driver.

Surveillance video obtained by News 12 shows a black Hyundai crashing into a barbershop and watch repair store, striking Mirna Núñes and trapping her 8-month-old daughter under the car on Lake Avenue. "I heard the squeals from the tires, and when I turned around, he hit my car, picked a lady up with her baby and went right straight through the barbershop, it was horrific, something like out of a movie," says witness Mandinga Brown.

Officers Rocco Fusco and Paul Samoyedy, who were next door at a bagel shop, along with some bystanders, were able to spring into action and lift the vehicle off the child. "We were advised that the baby was underneath the car which is when Rocco came up with the idea to lift the car and get the baby out," says Officer Samoyedy. “Everything happened in a split second. It’s just one of those things where you aren't thinking about anything. You just have to react. People in the community came in and did an outstanding job. No hesitation. Everybody did something to help out,” says Officer Fusco.

Núñes sustained a serious femur fracture, and her baby suffered a skull fracture and third-degree burns to her back and foot. A close family friend tells News 12 that while Núñes and her baby are doing well right now, the road to recovery will be a long one. "She got surgery on her right leg and the baby is also receiving surgery on her back, They're going to remove all of the dead skin cells. They're recovering well so I'm glad that she's doing well she's just really shocked that this is happening to her," says family friend Ariel Tirado.

Police say the driver of the car, David Poncurack, 43, of Yonkers, has been charged with driving while intoxicated, vehicular assault and unlicensed operation of a vehicle. He is being held on $500,000 bail and is due back in court Aug. 6.
