A Goshen jury found a Middletown man guilty of assault Thursday in an officer's shooting after six days of deliberations.
Ramyond Zayas was ultimately acquitted of six counts of attempted murder. He shot rookie cop Chris Dolan last year as Dolan and other officers responded to a domestic call at the defendant's house.
In a statement, Middletown Police Chief Matthew Byrne said, "I am disappointed by today's verdict. Although I appreciate the hard work of the jury ? it is our police officers who have lost the most. Mr. Zayas, in my opinion, has manipulated the truth to avoid responsibility for his cowardly actions."
Dolan's father delivered the news to his son via cell phone, as the recovered officer chose to patrol the streets rather than go to court. "He'll be looking at 40 years, so he won't hurt nobody again," Tim Dolan told his son while speaking through tears.
Jurors passed more than 30 notes asking the judge for clarification during deliberations before reaching their decision.
Zayas, who's being held on $1 million bail, is scheduled to be sentenced June 2.
