The Laurel Plains Elementary School was shut down yesterday over concerns about foul-smelling sewer fumes emanating from the building.

School officials announced Monday night at a meeting that students will attend classes at nearby Clarkstown South High School for the rest of the week.

The meeting was called following the absence of more than half of the student body at school Monday. Parents said at the meeting that their kids were complaining of symptoms and wouldn't allow them to return until further testing was completed and the school was deemed safe.

Officials say experts concluded the air quality was safe for students to return yesterday, but are conducting more tests at the school, trying to figure out what is causing the odor.
