Motorcyclists across Long Island gathered in Hauppauge to promote safety and awareness on the roads in the wake of two recent fatal incidents.
The event was held by the Long Island ABATE, which stands for American Bikers for Awareness Training and Education.
Safety advocates are urging Long Islanders to be alert on the road, whether they are on two wheels or four. They say distracted driving is a serious problem on our roadways.
"The focus on safety couldn't be more important…We want them to be safe and enjoy. We want all drivers to be safe. Distracted driving is a significant problem in Suffolk County," said Suffolk County Deputy Executive Sylvia Diaz.
The Suffolk County Highway Department escorted motorcyclists on their safety awareness run to Riverhead. This is the 29th year of the motorcycle safety event.
A 64-year-old man was charged Saturday with second-degree murder in an alleged North Hills
road rage incident that left a 29-year-old motorcyclist dead on the Long Island Expressway service road.
An Oceanside man was also charged with murder after prosecutors say he ran over a motorcyclist, killing him in Queens in an
act of road rage.
