A Rye City police officer helped his wife give birth to their baby girl -- on the Taconic Parkway.

White Plains Hospital was the goal Sunday night, but the baby had another destination in mind.

It was around 10 p.m. Sunday when Rye City Police Officer Chad Delgado and his wife, Lauren, were driving to White Plains Hospital - but Lauren felt her contractions getting worse.

Chad says as they passed the Yorktown exit on the Taconic,  his wife started to let out occasional screams. She said knew she her baby girl wasn't waiting any longer.

The moment Chad says he knew to pull over was when one scream turned to two.

He pulled off the parkway in Yorktown and helped his wife deliver their baby girl, Violet Everleigh Delgado, at 10:25 p.m. She weighed 6 pound, 7 ounces. 

Chad used his quick and calm thinking to pull his wife's drawstring from her pants and tie the umbilical cord before finally heading to the hospital.

It became a team effort as EMS and a number of Yorktown police officers pulled through to help - even a good Samaritan driver pulled over and offered a towel.

Violet is the third Delgado child with two older brothers at ages 2 and 4.

The family finally returned home from this hospital this morning and say they are happy, healthy - and tired.
