Local Catholic schools to open amid teacher strike
Hudson Valley and Westchester Catholic schools will open Tuesday, according to administrators, but it's unclear who'll be teaching as educators strike.
Monday night, the archdiocese rejected the latest offer from the union, paving the way for the strike. Hundreds of Catholic school teachers at 10 Hudson Valley, Westchester and New York City schools plan to take to the picket lines. The move comes three days before Pope Benedict XVI's visit.
Locally, the strike would affect Archbishop Stepinac in White Plains, John F. Kennedy in Somers, John S. Burke in Goshen and Maria Regina in Hartsdale.
The teachers have been working without a contract since September. According to teachers, salaries and benefits remain sticking points in negotiations with the New York Archdiocese. The archdiocese maintains it's given its best and final offer and no last-minute negotiations are scheduled.
Many parents and students fully support the teachers. "We're willing to stand by the teachers in whatever they do because it's time they get paid," said Maria Regina student Samantha Coombs.
