A convicted sex offender from Illinois has been given a 15-year prison sentence for trying to meet an underage girl for sex in Dutchess County.

Prosecutors say 49-year-old Derek Hasselbrink sent inappropriate messages to a 15-year-old girl over the course of several months in 2023.

He then traveled to the area to meet the girl near her home in July, according to investigators.

In addition to his prison term, he was also sentenced to 15 years of supervised release.
