Residents in Commack say they were caught off guard after learning a shooting happened near their community early Sunday morning.
Police say shots were fired around 2:15 a.m. by someone inside a car traveling in an unknown direction on Commack Road. A man was struck by gunfire and later drove himself to South Shore University Hospital for treatment.
Police have not said where on his body the victim was shot but say he is expected to be released from the hospital. Police have released limited information about the incident and have not said whether the individuals involved knew each other.
Neighbors say while street racing is common on Saturday nights in the area, a shooting is something they have never experienced before.
“It’s a complete surprise to us,” said Lal Uttam of Commack. “Of course we didn’t know anything was going to happen. There’s been street racing on the street before, but this is the first time we’ve ever heard of anything like this.”
Police say no further information is expected to be released at this time.
