Illegally subdivided homes in the Hudson Valley have been a problem for years, spurring some officials in Spring Valley to push for more fire inspectors.
Complicating the issue is Mayor Demeza Delhomme's recent suspension of the chief building inspector after an argument over the city's new mail opening policy.
Delhomme has called a special meeting Monday requesting that the village board hire new fire inspectors.
The mayor is asking village trustees for more than $600,000 to hire fire inspectors and building inspectors. He says his request is urgent because there are not enough inspectors in the village to handle the current need.
The meeting comes on the heels of two recent fires in the village where the properties were found to be illegally subdivided.
