In the wake of last week's deadly Northern Illinois University campus shooting, Middletown police held a drill Tuesday to simulate similar situations.
Armed and ready, the Tactical Response Team stormed Middletown High School, which is currently in recess. The drill involved establishing contact and negotiating with a robber who ran into the school and took hostages.
Officials say practice definitely makes perfect. "There's a mandate by the state that they have to have plans like this in all schools," says Ken Haverlan, who is in charge of Middletown school security. "But the plans only work very well if you test them and make sure they're working properly. That's what we're doing."
The police department says it plans to hold more drills in the near future.
