A robbery attempt at a convenience store in Middletown ended with the suspect dead after suffering a medical emergency while trying to flee, according to the Orange County District Attorney.
Police say the incident happened shortly before 8 p.m. Wednesday at a convenience store in the area of 130 Wickham Ave.
Authorities say a 61-year-old man attempted to rob the store and ran out with cash.
The 59-year-old female clerk chased the suspect out of the store and down the street in an attempt to retrieve the money.
According to the district attorney, the suspect suffered a medical emergency while trying to run away.
A witness who saw the incident called police.
The man was taken to Garnet Health Medical Center, where officials say he later died.
The district attorney says the suspect had a history of heart issues, but his exact cause of death remains under investigation.
Police blocked off Wickham Avenue between Low Avenue and Grove Street for several hours while detectives processed the scene.
