More than 1,400 Eversource customers were listed on the company's website as being without power early Tuesday morning after a large tree came down in Stamford.
It happened on Valley Road, shortly before it turns into Highland Road around 4 a.m.
"I just heard a loud thud…and I was wondering what the hell was that?” said Dave Nanarello, one of the people who lost power.
At least one car was crushed by the trees, and downed power lines were seen around the Glenbrook neighborhood. Workers said several transformers blew.
"I'm just glad nobody was hurt," said Lindsey Oyola, who lives next to the tree and lost power. "Property can be replaced but, it's just very scary."
The impacted area included homes and apartment buildings, like the one Christine Brown lives in.
"I got up and I noticed it was like really cold, and it's no power…The whole building is completely dark," she said.
While Eversource told News 12 that crews were able to divert some electricity and get the power back online for a lot of people quickly, there were still more than 550 customers who spent the morning without it - including Brown.
"The elevators were not working, people had to go to work and the garage would not open," she said.
"I'm looking for generators already," said Nanarello. "This is very rare around here - I think in 10 years, I've never seen anything like it."
Making a rough situation even harder for the neighbors was the temperature and wind – which combined to make a bitterly cold day.
"[My house is] freezing. Freezing cold," said Oyola. "I have one candle, I wasn't fully prepared for this but, just blankets and honestly snuggling up with my dogs."
Crews, including trucks from Eversource, tree services and the fire department arrived on the scene just before 8 a.m.
Estimates of getting the power back on were pushed back by Eversource, making mid- to-late afternoon seem more likely.
