According to Deputy Fire Chief Kim Odindo with the Mount Vernon Fire Department, the entire north side of the building from floor one to floor five was affected.
Three apartments were directly impacted.
Chief Odindo says reports of smoke in the building came in at around 11:30 Christmas morning at 56 Sheridan avenue.
Upon arrival, Chief Odindo says multiple occupants were already exiting the building.
“…Also identified a fire on the first floor behind one of the stoves, kitchen fire. That fire quickly progressed to the second floor via open chases that were inherent in the building’s construction, and then it required us to advance multiple lines to put that fire out," he said.
