Patterson-Howard also highlighted money being invested in the city's streets and sewage system. She says crime in Mount Vernon has dropped 14% since last year, with more than 100 guns taken off the streets since 2020. Patterson-Howard also recognized the tragic death of teenager Kayla Green.
"Our children, seniors, families, businesses, houses of worship, and yes, even our city, has tried to find creative ways to survive and press through times that we've never seen in our lifetime,” she said. “I can't stand here in the spring of 2022 and fail to mention the pain that many of our school children and our wider community are experiencing after the senseless murder of Kayla Green just a few weeks ago," said Patterson-Howard.
A 15-year-old is facing charges in Green's death.
