The state is sounding the alarm on the Mount Vernon School District’s finances.

A total of 31 district across New York are now flagged for 'fiscal stress' under the monitoring of the state comptroller’s office.

Topping the list is Mt. Vernon.

The district has faced years of financial struggles, declining enrollment and costly building repairs.

Last year, district officials closed three schools and dozens of staff members were out of job.

State officials say the report is based on financial data filed through the end of last year.
