Some faculty members in the North Rockland School District may be receiving pink slips this year.

District leaders say 30 jobs must be cut from the budget in order to keep spending down. School officials also say the cuts are necessary because of the impact the Mirant situation has had on the district and taxpayers. The district, along with towns and villages in North Rockland are paying the price for the bankrupt Mirant utility company's failure to pay taxes. This year, the district must pay $15 million as part of the settlement.

In addition to job cuts, the superintendent also proposed slashing summer school buses and late buses. The district has not yet decided what positions to cut.
