Work is underway to repair a dangerously large hole carved into a Lawrence sidewalk after News 12 contacted National Grid with residents' safety concerns.
“That’s very dangerous," Lawrence worker Steven Davila said. "I have complained about it, but nobody heard it.”
A spokesperson for National Grid said the hole formed during last night's storms and the utility company dispatched crews out immediately once they were made aware of the issue.
The gap, which spanned the entire width of the sidewalk along Central Avenue near Doughty Boulevard, forced walkers and bicyclists to swerve onto private property and the road.
News 12 first started receiving calls from concerned residents last night about the size of the hole and that it was left unattended.
Work is expected to be completed by this afternoon.
In a statement, National Grid says “Overnight, heavy rain eroded the dirt surrounding an ongoing construction project in Lawrence. Our crews responded promptly and are currently on-site, backfilling the area and taking all necessary steps to ensure the site is safe and secure.”
