A new variant of the coronavirus has been detected in New York City.

The variant carries mutations that may help it evade the body's natural immune response and antibody treatments.

That research was conducted separately by Columbia University and Caltech.

Neither study has been peer-reviewed yet.

One of the mutations is the same change found in the variant first seen in South Africa.
