The New York Power Authority and New York Transco held an informational meeting on Tuesday in New Rochelle regarding Propel NY Energy, which looks to increase the capacity of New York state's electrical grid using an underground transmission system in parts of Long Island, the Bronx, Queens and Westchester County.
The proposal looks to make energy more reliable throughout the state, especially with severe weather, to increase the overall grid capacity and more.
"This proposal is core infrastructure...it's something we rely on each day of our lives. we don't typically think of electric transmission, but it is vital to our schools, our hospitals, and overall community health and safety," said Shannon Baxevanis, with New York Transco.
If approved, the 90-mile-long project would connect six underground transmission lines to parts of Long Island, Queens, Westchester and the Bronx.
The lines in Westchester would go through portions of Eastchester, New Rochelle, Pelham, Mount Vernon and Yonkers.
"Our goal is to get this bill out as quickly as possible to minimize impacts on New Yorkers and to make sure that we have a quickly installed grid that is in service providing good and reliable power, and transmission capabilities to all New Yorkers," said Quentin McMahon, with the New York Power Authority.
The proposal is currently in its permitting phase and must go through several approval processes before construction can begin.
If approved, the project is expected to start in 2026.
