The opening of a new synagogue in Monroe has been postponed after vandals damaged several windows and doors.

The Congregation of the Monroe-Woodbury Jewish Center was days away from moving into its new home. But on Monday, construction crews arrived to find windows and doors smashed into pieces.

"It's painful to every single member of this community, myself included," says Rabbi Adam Kligfeld of Congregation Eitz Chaim. He says the damage is a reminder of what happened when synagogues were destroyed in Poland and Germany in 1939.

Investigators say the suspect or suspects actually ripped a light out of the ground and used it to break the windows. Police are not treating the incident as a hate crime but are continuing to investigate.
