The convicted sex offender who killed himself after going on a shooting rampage in New Windsor Monday was apparently about to be sent to jail.

Victor Piazza, 38, was supposed to be at a parole violation hearing, but instead he went to his old job at Verla International nail polish factory and opened fire. Police say the shootings may have been prompted by a probation officer's surprise visit to Piazza's home Friday. The officer found Piazza possessed pornography and alcohol in violation of his probation for a 2004 child pornography charge. Paperwork on the violation, which could have landed him in jail,was to be filed Monday. Many of the employees at Verla returned to work Tuesday, but co-owners Robert Roth, 65, of Wallkill, and Mario Maffei, 57, of Greenwich, Connecticut are still hospitalized in stable condition. Another employee, 48-year-old JoAnne O'Brien, of Greenwood Lake, is listed in critical condition.Related Story:
