The city's public school students are officially saying goodbye to summer and kicking off a new school year. 

Some schools have different start times this September, but parents can search online with the Department of Education to double check what it is for their kids. Some pre-K and kindergarten students will have an early dismissal. 

And while all students are able to get a free breakfast at school, those in need of a free lunch will need to complete an application. That form can also be found on the city's DOE website. 

It's also the first day for thousands of youngsters who will be attending school under Mayor Bill de Blasio's signature universal pre-K program. 

De Blasio and schools Chancellor Carmen Farina are expected to make their way around the boroughs to visit students at various schools.
