Bronx fire death toll lowered to 17 as NYC mourns, community bands together to support

Community members across New York City are coming together to support the families impacted by the Sunday Bronx fire that killed 17 people.
Mayor Eric Adams says the medical examiner has modified the death toll from the Bronx fire to 17 people - nine adults and eight children. The number was reported Sunday to be 19.
Adams is calling this incident one of the worst fires in modern history. A space heater located in a Bronx building ended up causing the fire that was responded to by over 200 firefighters.
The Sunday morning tragedy triggered fire alarms. One resident said he didn’t think anything of it because of how often alarms went off in the building before. The FDNY is citing a faulty space heater and the apartment door being left open as the causes of the spreading fire and smoke throughout the building.
The smoke was oppressive to those trying to escape, forcing some people to resort to staying in their homes. As of right now, over 60 people are currently in the hospital with 13 of them in critical condition.
The FDNY stated that they found victims on each floor, and the 120-unit building has been issued a partial vacate order on the third floor due to fire damage in those units.
As more and more details are being discovered about this fire, those in the community are still rallying to support and rebuild the community, including Gov. Kathy Hochul who came from Albany to show her support.
First Deputy Commissioner Christina Farrell tells News 12, “We have recent information that residents on the top three floors of the building are in the process of being notified by building management that they can re-enter their apartments. We should have some updates tomorrow as work continues.”
